The Flintstones
The Flintstones (The Flinstones) is an animated television series American 166 episodes of 25 minutes, created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera and broadcast between September 30, 1960 and 1 April 1966 on the ABC network. In France, the series was broadcast on Antenne 2 and then on Cartoon Network. In Quebec, the series was broadcast by Radio-Canada, Take 2 and TQS.

Synopsis
Everything happens in the Stone Age in a town called Bedrock (Caillouville in France and St. Granite Quebec), but where the company is exactly the same as that of the USA in the second half of the twentieth century. It is a fanciful version of prehistory where dinosaurs, ptérodactyles, tigers sabre-toothed, woolly mammoths and other animals disappeared long coexist with men in caves, which employ a technology similar to the twentieth century, using mainly of various animals as tools. The characters drive cars made of stone or wood and skins of animals, and operated by gasoline, although need to use his feet to put them on the way. Eddie Murphy became famous in the USA through his talents as a comedian, discovered in his performance at the show Saturday Night Live and his performances Delirious (1984) and Raw (1987). Youth
Eddie Murphy was born in Brooklyn, New York. His mother is called Lilian Murphy and is operator and his father is Charles Murphy, policeman. Several scenarios have recounted the genesis of character, but not necessarily in a consistent manner. At the end of 50 years, a malfrat named Red Hood appears in Detective Comics # 168. It can be assumed that this is the first real appearance of the person who will become the Joker, but it should be noted that several people have borrowed this identity. The color and the current album is published in 1946.

Synopsis
The story takes place in the era of Prohibition. After the interlude imposed the Congo, Tintin is sent to the United States. Arriving in Chicago, he is immediately kidnapped by gangsters of Al Capone, who regard it as dangerous.

Tintin in America began to appear in Le Petit Vingtième from 3 September 1931. It will continue to appear for a little over a year because of two boards a week.

When creating the album, Hergé mainly wanted to run around the history of American Indians to whom he had a great fascination. Analysis
Towards 1930, the Congo was a real Eldorado for Belgium. The Congo, eighty times larger than the countries that colonisait, had a basement extremely rich. At that time, the territory lacked manpower. The trend of the time was to advertise for this country.

The release of the album began on June 5, 1930 in Le Petit Vingtième and ended June 11, 1931. The album was first published by Editions du Petit Twentieth then it was taken a little later editions Casterman which s'assurèrent publication of Adventures of Tintin in exclusivity.

For resumption of the album in 1946, Hergé redessina adventure. He put in color, reduced from 115 boards to 62 pages and changed the colonialist ideology of the album. Thus, the geography and history lesson that gave Tintin "Your homeland, Belgium" found himself replaced by a math lesson. Aware of these stereotypes that are actually the basis of certain convictions of this work for racist content, Hergé however defended his work by saying that his characters were black fantasy, and cited in this sense a laudatory article published by the magazine in Zaire 1969, that "if some images caricatures of the Congolese people by Tintin in the Congo are white smile, they laugh frankly Congolese, because the Congolese people will find reasons to mock the white man who saw them as"

In 2007, controversy linked to these stereotypes becomes valid after a notice of the British Commission for Racial Equality (British Commission on Racial Equality) who finds the cartoon "racist" and asks to withdraw bookstores. The bookseller Borders then decided not to sell the album "The radius child," moving towards "adult comics". Shortly thereafter, a Congolese student at the Free University of Brussels filed complaints of racism and demand that the album be withdrawn from commerce.

A pamphlet against the Bolshevik system
On 10 January 1929, Hergé created, commissioned by the abbot Wallez, owner of The Twentieth Century, the character of Tintin for Youth Supplement Le Petit Vingtième. At that time, there was anti-Communist obsession very important and it did not seem too bad the leaders of the newspaper to their young readers aware of the reality of Bolshevism.

To create Tintin in the Land of the Soviets, Hergé has not had the opportunity to visit the country in which Tintin was sent, or to draw on a wealth of documentation. All the elements contained in this episode were provided by Moscow without sails, written by Joseph Douillet, former consul of Belgium in Russia, in Rostov-on-Don. In his book, Douillet attack strongly communism and the Soviet Government; Tintin in the Land of the Soviets is somehow setting comic Moscow without sails, which was its main source documentary.

The documentary sources limited
Herge has never been in the USSR, it draws its information mainly in the book Moscow without sails written by Joseph Douillet, former consul of Belgium in the USSR. The copies of entire passages, for example a scene where communists are elected by threatening voters with their revolvers (page 33). Here is a quote from the book Douillet:

"The communist comrade Oubiykone (outgoing chairman of the executive committee) gave a speech. Here are the terms in which it apostropha the crowd: "Three lists are present: one is that of the Communist Party. Let those who oppose this list raise their hands!" At the same time, Oubiykone and his four colleagues out their revolvers and désignèrent the crowd of peasants, the weapon threatening the fist. Oubiykone continued: "Who was against this list? Person? I declare that the list Communist pass unanimously. It is therefore unnecessary to vote for the other two." "

Other citation Douillet who clearly inspired Hergé:

"In a village where there were ten schools, it survived under the Soviet regime a high school: mixed. The Communists meet indeed, with a premeditated immoral, the two sexes in schools. "

Later, Hergé tell that he knew of the USSR that what we said in its midst who was the petty bourgeoisie Brussels. As for Tintin au Congo, he will then have as little documented and have fulfilled these adventures pictures of the time. The first work of Herge
In creating this story that Hergé has learned to make the BD. Tintin, at the beginning of history, no fine and has the air of a big lourdaud scout, but in the end, it looks much more the character that we know. However, the technique of dialogue integrated into the design is far from being the best. In some ways, these 138 boards have allowed Hergé everything an apprenticeship.

Tintin in the Land of the Soviets, originally published before the war to 5 000 copies, was the only album not to be taken over by Casterman, according to the will of Hergé. The album became quickly found and collectors were obviously willing to pay dearly for having a copy. Also, counterfeits they saw the day. It was not until 1973 that the album was found republished in the form of a volume of the Archives Herge. In 1981, to counter new pirated versions, Tintin in the Land of the Soviets was reissued in the form of a genuine facsimile. For 70 years of Tintin, Casterman, with the permission of the Herge Foundation, published Tintin in the Land of the Soviets, always in black and white in the same form as other albums, against the will of Herge who wanted the Tintin first album remains outside the actual series.

A "pirate" colour is still circulating.

A hero still rough
The character of Tintin was brand new, drawing refined during the adventure. "Houppette" hero "is not always the same form. Although it is in black and white, this album has allowed Hergé preparing its design. The character of Tintin is not yet fully defined. It is one of three albums where you can see Tintin drunk (the others being The Broken Ear and The Crab with the Golden Pliers). At the end of each second board, Tintin is regularly threatening to maintain the suspense. Each week, the work of Herge Tintin is to get out of the danger which threatens or to invent something new.

Anecdotes
On May 8, 1930, when the adventure was finally released in Petit Vingtième, the newspaper announced the return of Tintin at the Gare du Nord in Brussels and hired someone to play the role of Tintin. A crowd rushed immediately to the station, demonstrating the success of the work of Herge. The scene was also included in the album.

The Adventures of Tintin and Snowy is the title of a series of comic books created by Belgian cartoonist Herge (1907-1983), whose nickname was formed intiales reverse his real name Georges Remi.

The series was first published in Le Petit Vingtième, children's supplement of the Belgian newspaper the Twentieth Century, January 10, 1929. The Adventures of Tintin take place in a carefully reproducing universe of ours, full of characters with character traits well defined. This series is so popular tirelessly for over 70 years by readers and critics.

The hero of the series is the eponymous character Tintin, a young reporter and globe-trotting Belgian. He is accompanied during his adventures by his faithful dog: Milou. Later, several popular figures have been grafted the adventures, including Captain Haddock and other senior secondary characters in colour.

The hit series was published in the form of albums (23 total), became a large-circulation magazine (Le Journal de Tintin), and has been adapted to both the cinema and theatre. The Adventures of Tintin are among the most famous European comics of the twentieth century. They have been translated into about fifty languages and sold more than 200 million copies.

The cartoon Tintin has long appreciated for his drawings of both live and stripped in line with the style created by Herge, the line clear. The intrigue captivating and well-documented albums of Tintin mixes genres: the adventures of cape and sword with a touch of fantasy to police investigations, through the stories of espionage, or even science fiction. The stories told in Tintin are still the greater part humour "banana skin" (in English slapstick), offset humour in the latest albums by a subtle sense of irony and reflection on society.

Overview
Tintin is a reporter, whose profession Herge uses to mix his character in several contemporary events of the period during which he worked (in particular the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia and the World War II), and even some newer (the first landing on Moon). Hergé has also created around the world Tintin a stylized details, but realistic. He came to get that effect, drawing a large collection of photographs.

The Adventures of Tintin follow a very linear plot - a mystery solved in a logical way - but the Hergé presented with a sense of humour characteristic. Moreover, there is introduced secondary characters who, though predictable, are endearing and capture the attention of the reader. The designer was also particularly well understood mechanisms of comic books, particularly in rhythm. This sense of rhythm is evident in Les Bijoux de la Castafiore, an album whose action takes place in a tense atmosphere when he did not go much!

Hergé was in the early days created the adventures of Tintin in improvising, not knowing in advance how the heroes will come out of all its misfortunes. It has been brought to document and plan its scenarios after completing Cigars of the Pharaoh. The impetus came from Zhang Chongren (Tchang Tchong-jen and Chang), a Chinese student who, learning that Hergé would send Tintin in China for its next adventure, prompted not peddling the ideas that received had Europeans of the time on China. Herge and Zhang have worked together on the next episode of the series: The Blue Lotus, which is regarded by critics as one of the masterpieces of Hergé.

The external events have also forced Hergé to make other changes in the way he had to create his cartoons. The Second World War and the invasion of Belgium by Hitler's armies have resulted in the closure of the newspaper which appeared in The Adventures. Herge was working at that time on Tintin in the land of black gold, which would appear after the war. Tintin in America and Black Island, already published, were banned by the Nazi censors, frustrated by how the USA and Britain were presented. However, Hergé has been able to continue the adventures of Tintin, publishing five albums, and by issuing two other episodes in a newspaper approved by the Germans, Le Soir. During and after the German occupation, Hergé has been accused of being a collaborator, because this newspaper was controlled by the Nazis. He was briefly detained after the Liberation. He defended by claiming he had simply done his job during the Occupation, as would a plumber or a carpenter. His work this time, unlike its production before and after the war, is politically neutral, and gave adventures classics as The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure. However, the apocalyptic album reflects the shooting star doubts Hergé during this politically turbulent time.

The shortage of paper of the immediate post-war caused a change of format of Adventures. Hergé used to give his albums a number of pages needed to develop its scenarios. However, because of restrictions on paper, the publisher Casterman asked Herge drawing boards smaller, and adopt an arbitrary length of 62 pages per album. Hergé has expanded its team (the top ten albums had been designed by himself and his wife), which he eventually transformed into the studio.

The adoption of color allowed Hergé give greater scope to his work. His way was to use more subtle than the Americans, with values made a better impression, allowing the use of Quadrichromie and, thus, a film of light and shadows. Herge and his studio used images to fill half pages, or simply to detail and put forward a scene. The use of color highlighted the important details. Hergé emphasizes this point by saying: "I consider my stories as movies. So, no narration, no description. All importance, I give the image."

The personal life of Herge has also influenced the series, for example with Tintin in Tibet, heavily influenced by his depression. His nightmares, he would have described as "white" are echoed in the snowy landscapes of the album. The plot is based on research carried out by Tintin to find Zhang Chongren, met earlier in The Blue Lotus. This episode does not staged bandit and Herge, who abstains from any value judgement, refuses to classify the Snow Man (Yeti) of "abominable".

The Adventures of Tintin ended prematurely with the death of Herge March 3, 1983. The twenty-fourth adventure, Tintin and Alph-Art, remained unfinished. In this album, Tintin in the changing world of modern art, and history ends with a scene where Tintin may be killed, encased in Plexiglas, and exposed as a work of art.

Tintin and Snowy
Tintin is a young Belgian reporter who finds himself embroiled in a dangerous business where he spends héroiquement for action to save the day. Virtually all the Tintin adventures show enthusiastically performing its tasks investigative journalist, but excluding the first album, we do not ever see in the process of writing articles. He is a young man adopting a more or less neutral, it is less picturesque than the latter roles in the series. In this regard, it is the image of Mr-all-the-world (Tintin stands for french literally "anything").

Snowy, a white fox terrier, is the four-legged companion of Tintin. They save regularly both situations of peril. It "speaks" often the reader through his thoughts (often displaying a humorous deadpan), which are supposed not to be heard by other characters. As Captain Haddock, Milou loves whisky Loch Lomond. The few times he drinks it attract trouble, and cause him to a violent arachnophobie. The name of Milou is generally regarded as an indirect reference to a love of youth by Herge, Marie-Louise Van Cutsem, whose nickname was "Malou".

It may explain the origins of two characters. Some have alleged that Robert Sexé, a reporter-photographer whose exploits were recounted in the Belgian press in the mid to late 20, had inspired the character Tintin. It is famous for its resemblance to the latter, and the Herge Foundation has recognized that it was not difficult to imagine that the adventures of Sexé have been able to influence Hergé. At that time, Sexé had travelled the world on a motorcycle manufactured by Gillet and Herstal. René Milhoux was a champion and record holder motorcycle at the time. In 1928, while at Herstal Sexé was discussing its projects with Leon Gillet, Gillet put into contact with its new champion, Milhoux, who had just left the bikes ready for the team Gillet-Herstal. The two men quickly lièrent friendship and spent hours talking about motorcycles and travel, Sexé asking Milhoux to transmit his knowledge of mechanics and motorcycles pushed beyond their limits. With this mixture of erudition and experience, Sexé conducted a large number of trips across the world, he has published several reports in the press.

The secretary-general of the Herge Foundation admitted that you could easily imagine that the young Georges Remi was able to be inspired by the exploits of two friends, media, Sexé with his travels and his documentaries, and Milhoux with its victories and its records, to create the characters of Tintin, the famous globe-trotting journalist, and his faithful companion Snowy.

Captain Haddock
Captain Archibald Haddock, a marine commander descent contested (it is perhaps original English, French or Belgian) is the best friend of Tintin. It appeared for the first time in The Crab claws of the gold. Haddock was initially portrayed as a character unstable and alcoholic, but he became more respectable in the future. It turns into a real hero, and even mundane personality after discovering the treasure of his ancestor, François de Hadoque in Red Rackham's Treasure. The human side and gruff, sarcasm Captain just temper the incredible heroism of Tintin. It is always quick to comment asséner edged whenever the young reporter seems too idealistic. Captain Haddock lives in the luxurious Chateau de Moulinsart. Haddock uses a colorful palette of insults and swear words to express his bad mood, such as: "A thousand million billion thunder Brest", "Wren", "Bashi-bazouk", "Ectoplasm", "Anacoluthe," " Cholera ", but none is actually considered a rudeness.

Haddock is an inveterate drinker, amateur unconditional whisky Loch Lomond. Its moments of intoxication are often used to cause a comic effect.

Hergé said that the surname of Haddock was inspired by a "sad English fish who drinks a lot", said the smoked haddock - or haddock - he particularly appreciated. Haddock has remained without a name until the last album, Tintin and the Picaros, where Archibald is the first name mentioned.

Secondary Characters
The secondary characters Hergé were recognized as being more fleshed out that the central character. Each of them has a certain force of character and a complex personality who sometimes been compared with those of characters of Charles Dickens. Hergé has used the latter roles to create a realistic universe serve as a framework the adventures of his characters. For more realism and consistency, these characters reappeared throughout the series of albums. It has been argued that the occupation of Belgium and the limits imposed by Herge had compelled to focus on describing the characters to avoid having to talk about the difficult political context of the time. The majority of secondary character Adventures of Tintin was created during this period.

* Professor Tryphon Sunflower, physicist head-to-l'air and hard of hearing, is a character of secondary importance - but recurring - alongside Tintin, Snowy and Captain Haddock. It appeared for the first time in Red Rackham's Treasure. Sunflower is partly inspired by Auguste Piccard (a Swiss physicist). Initially unpopular with the characters pincipaux, his generous nature and its scientific skills have enabled him to forge lasting ties with them.

* Thomson and Thompson are packed two detectives who, while having no relationship, seem to be twins whose only visible difference is the shape of their moustache. They contribute in large part to the comic adventures by their chronic tendency to make contrepètries and their gross incompetence. The two detectives are, among others inspired, father and uncle of Herge, twins who wore both a bowler hat identical.

Landscapes
The landscapes represented in Tintin add depth to the vignettes drawn by Hergé. There mixture of real and imaginary places. The starting point of his heroes is Belgium, with a first time on 26, rue du Labrador, then Castle Moulinsart. The best example of creativity Hergé on the subject is visible in the Sceptre Ottokar, where Hergé invents two imaginary countries (Syldavie and Bordurie), and invites readers to visit them by inserting a tourist brochure during history.

Searches Documentary
Hergé to research conducted its first-depth documentaries for the album The Blue Lotus, which he confirms himself: "It was then that I started to inform me, and I felt a real interest for people and countries in which j'envoyais Tintin, performing a sort of duty of credibility with my readers. " The material Herge and his photographic funds have helped build a realistic world for his hero. He went up to create imaginary countries and to develop a political culture that was their own. These lands were largely fictitious inspired by the countries and cultures in the age of Herge.

Pierre Skilling asserts that Hergé saw the monarchy as "a legitimate form of government", noting in passing that "the values [democratic] seem absent in this type of cartoon classic Franco-Belgian." The Syldavie, particularly is described with great detail, Herge having with a history, customs and language. It places this country somewhere in the Balkans, and it is based on the confession of the author himself, Albania. The country is attacked by its neighbor, Bordurie, which attempts to annex in the Sceptre Ottokar. This situation clearly recalls that of Czechoslovakia or Austria face of Nazi Germany just before World War II.

We can cite as examples the months of preparation necessary to Hergé to imagine the lunar expedition of Tintin, described in two parts in Objective One Moon and walked on the Moon. The research prior to the preparation of its scenario have been commented in the New Scientist: "The considerable research undertaken by Herge have enabled him to create a spacesuit very close to that which would be used for future lunar travel, even if its rocket was very different from what existed in the future ". For the latter, Hergé was actually inspired by the German V2.

After physicist Dr. Robert Bruce Banner was caught in the blast of a gamma bomb he created, he was transformed into the Hulk, a raging monster. The character, both as Banner and the Hulk, is frequently pursued by the police or the armed forces, often as a result of the destruction he causes. While the coloration of the character's skin varies during the course of its publication history, the Hulk is most often depicted as green. In forty years, he has battled virtually every hero and villain in the Marvel Universe. He has been featured in a number of animated series, a feature film directed by Ang Lee, and a television series with spin-off television movies starring Bill Bixby as Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the Hulk.

Catwoman is a fictional character associated with DC Comics' Batman franchise and created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane.

The original and most widely known Catwoman, Selina Kyle, first appeared in Batman #1 (Spring 1940) in which she was known as The Cat. As an adversary of Batman, she was a whip-carrying burglar with a taste for high stake thefts. Modern writers have attributed her activities and costumed identity as a response to a history of abuse.

Since the 1990s, Catwoman has been featured in an eponymous series that cast her as an anti-hero rather than a supervillainess. The character has been one of Batman's most enduring love interests, and has occasionally been depicted as his one true love.

A popular figure, Catwoman has been featured in most media adaptations related to Batman. Superman is a fictional, comic book superhero widely considered to be one of the most famous and popular such characters[1] and an American cultural icon.[2][3][4][5] Created by American writer Jerry Siegel and Canadian artist Joe Shuster in 1932 and sold to Detective Comics, Inc. in 1938, he first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June 1938) and subsequently appeared in various radio serials, television programs, films, newspaper strips, and video games.

With a premise that taps into adolescent fantasy, Superman is born Kal-El on the alien planet Krypton, before being rocketed to Earth as an infant by his scientist father moments before the planet's destruction. Adopted and raised by a Kansas farmer and his wife, the child is raised as Clark Kent, and imbued with a strong moral compass. Upon reaching maturity the character develops superhuman abilities, resolving to use these for the benefit of humanity. With the success of his adventures, Superman helped to create the superhero genre and establish its primacy within the American comic book.[2]

While referred to less flatteringly as "the big blue Boy Scout" by some of his fellow superheroes,[6] Superman is hailed as "The Man of Steel," "The Man of Tomorrow," and "The Last Son of Krypton," by the general public within the comics. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster first created a bald telepathic villain bent on dominating the entire world. He appeared in the short story "The Reign of the Superman" from Science Fiction #3, a science fiction fanzine that Siegel published in 1933.[9] Siegel re-wrote the character in 1933 as a hero, bearing little or no resemblance to his villainous namesake, and began a six-year quest to find a publisher. Titling it The Superman, Siegel and Shuster offered it to Consolidated Book publishing, who had published a 48-page black-and-white comic book entitled Detective Dan: Secret Operative No. 48. Although the duo received an encouraging letter, Consolidated never again published comic books. Shuster took this to heart and burned all pages of the story, the cover surviving only because Siegel rescued it from the fire. Siegel and Shuster each compared this character to Slam Bradley, an adventurer the pair had created for Detective Comics #1 (May 1939).

By 1934 the pair had once more re-envisioned the character. He became more of a hero in the mythic tradition, inspired by such characters as Samson and Hercules,[11] who would right the wrongs of Siegel and Shuster's times, fighting for social justice and against tyranny. It was at this stage the costume was introduced, Siegel later recalling that they created a "kind of costume and let's give him a big S on his chest, and a cape, make him as colorful as we can and as distinctive as we can."[12] The design was based in part on the costumes worn by characters in outer space settings published in pulp magazines, as well as comic strips such as Flash Gordon,[13] and also partly suggested by the traditional circus strong-man outfit.[12][14] However, the cape has been noted as being markedly different from the Victorian tradition. Gary Engle described it as without "precedent in popular culture" in Superman at Fifty: The Persistence of a Legend.[15] The pants-over-tights outfit was soon established as the basis for many future superhero outfits. This third version of the character was given extraordinary abilities, although this time of a physical nature as opposed to the mental abilities of the villainous Superman.[12]

The locale and the hero's civilian names were inspired by the movies, Shuster said in 1983. "Jerry created all the names. We were great movie fans, and were inspired a lot by the actors and actresses we saw. As for Clark Kent, he combined the names of Clark Gable and Kent Taylor. And Metropolis, the city in which Superman operated, came from the Fritz Lang movie [Metropolis, 1927], which we both loved".[16]

Although they were by now selling material to comic book publishers, notably Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson's National Allied Publishing, the pair decided to feature this character in a comic strip format, rather than in the longer comic book story format that was establishing itself at this time. They offered it to both Max Gaines, who passed, and to United Feature Syndicate, who expressed interest initially but finally rejected the strip in a letter dated February 18, 1937. However, in what historian Les Daniels describes as "an incredibly convoluted turn of events", Max Gaines ended up positioning the strip as the lead feature in Wheeler-Nicholson's new publication, Action Comics. Vin Sullivan, editor of the new book, wrote to the pair requesting that the comic strips be refashioned to suit the comic book format, requesting "eight panels a page". However Siegel and Shuster ignored this, utilising their own experience and ideas to create page layouts, with Siegel also identifying the image used for the cover of Action Comics #1 (June 1938), Superman's first appearance.[17]

Spider-Man is a fictional Marvel Comics superhero created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Since his first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 (Aug. 1962), he has become one of the world's most popular, enduring and commercially successful superheroes and is arguably Marvel's most popular character.

When Spider-Man first saw print in the 1960s, teenage characters in superhero comic books were usually sidekicks. The Spider-Man series broke ground by featuring a hero who himself was an adolescent, to whose "self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness" young readers could relate.[1] Spider-Man has since appeared in various media including several animated and live-action television series, syndicated newspaper comic strips and a successful series of films.

Marvel has published several Spider-Man comic book series, the first being The Amazing Spider-Man. Over the years, the Peter Parker character has developed from shy high school student to troubled college student to a married teacher and a member of the superhero team the New Avengers.

Publication history

By 1962, with the success of the Fantastic Four and other characters, Marvel editor and head writer Stan Lee was casting about for a new superhero idea. He said that the idea for Spider-Man arose from a surge in teenage demand for comic books, and the desire to create a character with whom teens could identify.[2] In his autobiography, Lee cites the non-superhuman pulp magazine crime fighter The Spider as an influence[3] and both there and in a multitude of print and video interviews said he was inspired by seeing a fly climb up a wall — adding in his autobiography that he has told that story so often he has become unsure of whether or not it is true.[4] Artist Ditko, in a 1990 article by himself, gave a more prosaic origin story for the name:

“ "In a discussion with me about Spider-Man, Stan said he liked the name Hawkman but DC had the name and character. Marvel would add Ant-Man [and the Wasp] so it would have the insect category. (Technically a spider is not an insect). From that I believed Stan had named the character.[5] ”

Lee approached Marvel publisher Martin Goodman to seek approval for the character. In a 1986 interview, he described in detail his arguments to overcome Goodman's objections.[1a] Goodman agreed to let Lee try out Spider-Man in the upcoming final issue of the canceled science-fiction/supernatural anthology series Amazing Adult Fantasy, which was renamed Amazing Fantasy for that single issue, #15 (Aug. 1962).[6]

Jack Kirby, in a 1982 interview, claimed Lee had minimal involvement in the character's creation, and that it had originated with Kirby and Joe Simon, who in the 1950s had proposed a character called The Silver Spider for the Crestwood comic Black Magic until the publisher went out of business. [1b]

Simon, in his 1990 autobiography, disputes Kirby's account, asserting that the supernatural anthology Black Magic was not a factor, and that he (Simon) devised the name "Spiderman" (later changed to "The Silver Spider"), while Kirby outlined the character's story and powers. Simon later elaborated that his and Kirby's character conception became the basis for Simon's Archie Comics superhero The Fly, introduced in early 1959.

Comics historian Greg Theakston says that Lee, after receiving Goodman's approval for the name Spider-Man and the "ordinary teen" concept, approached Kirby. Kirby told Lee about his 1950s Silver Spider/Spiderman, in which an orphaned boy living with an old couple finds a magic ring that gives him superpowers. Lee and Kirby "immediately sat down for a story conference" and Lee afterward directed Kirby to flesh out the character and draw some pages. Steve Ditko would be the inker.[7] "A day or two later", Kirby showed Lee the first six pages, and, as Lee recalled, "I hated the way he was doing it. Not that he did it badly — it just wasn't the character I wanted; it was too heroic".[8] Simon concurs that Kirby had shown the original Spiderman version to Lee, who liked the idea and assigned Kirby to draw sample pages of the new character but disliked the results — in Simon's description, "Captain America with cobwebs".[1c

Lee turned to Ditko, who developed a visual motif Lee found satisfactory, although Lee would later replace Ditko's original cover with one penciled by Kirby. Ditko said,
“ "The Spider-Man pages Stan showed me were nothing like the (eventually) published character. In fact, the only drawings of Spider-Man were on the splash [i.e., page 1] and at the end [where] Kirby had the guy leaping at you with a web gun... Anyway, the first five pages took place in the home, and the kid finds a ring and turns into Spider-Man.[9] ”

Ditko also recalled that,
“ One of the first things I did was to work up a costume. A vital, visual part of the character. I had to know how he looked ... before I did any breakdowns. For example: A clinging power so he wouldn't have hard shoes or boots, a hidden wrist-shooter versus a web gun and holster, etc. ... I wasn't sure Stan would like the idea of covering the character's face but I did it because it hid an obviously boyish face. It would also add mystery to the character....[10] ”

Much earlier, in a rare contemporaneous account, Ditko described his and Lee's contributions in a mail interview with Gary Martin published in Comic Fan #2 (Summer 1965): "Stan Lee thought the name up. I did costume, web gimmick on wrist & spider signal".[11] Additionally, Ditko shared a Manhattan studio with noted fetish artist Eric Stanton, an art-school classmate[12] who, in a 1988 interview with Theakston, recalled that although his contribution to Spider-Man was "almost nil", he and Ditko had "worked on storyboards together and I added a few ideas. But the whole thing was created by Steve on his own... I think I added the business about the webs coming out of his hands".[13]

Doraemon (ドラえもん, Doraemon?) is a Japanese manga series created by Fujiko F. Fujio (the pen name of Hiroshi Fujimoto) which later became an anime series and Asian franchise. The series is about a robotic cat named Doraemon, who travels back in time from the 22nd century to aid a schoolboy, Nobita Nobi.

The series first appeared in December 1969, when it was published simultaneously in six different magazines. In total, 1,344 stories were created in the original series, which are published by Shogakukan under the Tentōmushi (てんとう虫, Tentōmushi?) manga brand, extending to forty-five volumes. The volumes are collected in the Takaoka Central Library in Toyama, Japan, where Fujio was born.

Doraemon was awarded the first Shogakukan Manga Award for children's manga in 1982, and the first Osamu Tezuka Culture Award in 1997.

In Vietnam, Doraemon has become the series with largest amount of publishing to date (totally 40 million) and is continually printed and released[1].

History

In December 1969, the Doraemon manga appeared simultaneously in six different children's monthly magazines. The magazines were titled by the year of children's studies, which included Yoiko (good children), Yōchien (nursery school), and Shogaku Ichinensei (first grade) to Shogaku Yonnensei (fourth grade). By 1973, the series began to appear in two more magazines, Shogaku Gonensei (fifth grade) and Shogaku Rokunensei (sixth grade). The stories featured in each of the magazines were different, meaning the author was originally creating more than six stories each month. In 1977, CoroCoro Comic was launched as a magazine of Doraemon. Original manga based on the Doraemon movies were also released in CoroCoro Comic. The stories which are preserved under the Tentōmushi brand are the stories found in these magazines.

Since the debut of Doraemon in 1969, the stories have been selectively collected into forty-five books published from 1974 to 1996, which had a circulation of over 80 million in 1992. In addition, Doraemon has appeared in a variety of manga series by Shōgakukan. In 2005, Shōgakukan published a series of five more manga volumes under the title Doraemon+ (Doraemon Plus), which were not found in the forty-five Tentōmushi volumes.

Batman (originally referred to as the Bat-Man and still referred to at times as the Batman) is a fictional comic book superhero co-created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger (although only Kane receives official credit) and published by DC Comics. The character made his first appearance in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939). Batman's secret identity is Bruce Wayne, a wealthy industrialist, playboy, and philanthropist. Witnessing the murder of his parents as a child leads him to train himself to physical and intellectual perfection and don a bat-themed costume in order to fight crime. Batman operates in Gotham City, assisted by various supporting characters including his sidekick Robin and his butler Alfred Pennyworth, and fights an assortment of villains influenced by the characters' roots in film and pulp magazines. Unlike most superheroes, he does not possess any superpowers; he makes use of intellect, detective skills, science and technology, wealth, physical prowess, and intimidation in his war on crime.

Batman became a popular character soon after his introduction, and eventually gained his own title, Batman. As the decades wore on, differing takes on the character emerged. The late 1960s Batman television series utilized a camp aesthetic associated with the character for years after the show ended. Various creators worked to return the character to his dark roots, culminating in the 1986 miniseries Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, by writer-artist Frank Miller. That and the success of director Tim Burton's 1989 Batman motion picture helped reignite popular interest in the character. A cultural icon, Batman has been licensed and adapted into a variety of media, from radio to television and film, and appears on a variety of merchandise sold all over the world.

Publication history

Creation

In early 1938, the success of Superman in Action Comics prompted editors at the comic book division of National Publications (the future DC Comics) to request more superheroes for its titles. In response, Bob Kane created "the Bat-Man".[1] Collaborator Bill Finger recalled Kane
“ had an idea for a character called 'Batman', and he'd like me to see the drawings. I went over to Kane's, and he had drawn a character who looked very much like Superman with kind of ... reddish tights, I believe, with boots ... no gloves, no gauntlets ... with a small domino mask, swinging on a rope. He had two stiff wings that were sticking out, looking like bat wings. And under it was a big sign ... BATMAN.[2]

Finger offered such suggestions as giving the character a cowl instead of a simple domino mask, a cape instead of wings, and gloves, and removing the red sections from the original costume.[3] Finger said he devised the name Bruce Wayne for the character's secret identity: "Bruce Wayne's first name came from Robert Bruce, the Scottish patriot. Wayne, being a playboy, was a man of gentry. I searched for a name that would suggest colonialism. I tried Adams, Hancock ... then I thought of Mad Anthony Wayne."[4] Various aspects of Batman's personality, character history, visual design and equipment were inspired by contemporary popular culture of the 1930s, including movies, pulp magazines, comic strips, newspaper headlines, and even aspects of Kane himself.[5] Kane noted especially the influence of the films The Mark of Zorro (1920) and The Bat Whispers (1930) in the creation of the iconography associated with the character, while Finger drew inspiration from literary characters Doc Savage, The Shadow, and Sherlock Holmes in his depiction of Batman as a master sleuth and scientist.[6]

Kane himself, in his 1989 autobiography, detailed Finger's contributions to Batman creation:

“ One day I called Bill and said, 'I have a new character called the Bat-Man and I've made some crude, elementary sketches I'd like you to look at'. He came over and I showed him the drawings. At the time, I only had a small domino mask, like the one Robin later wore, on Batman's face. Bill said, 'Why not make him look more like a bat and put a hood on him, and take the eyeballs out and just put slits for eyes to make him look more mysterious?' At this point, the Bat-Man wore a red union suit; the wings, trunks, and mask were black. I thought that red and black would be a good combination. Bill said that the costume was too bright: 'Color it dark gray to make it look more ominous'. The cape looked like two stiff bat wings attached to his arms. As Bill and I talked, we realized that these wings would get cumbersome when Bat-Man was in action, and changed them into a cape, scalloped to look like bat wings when he was fighting or swinging down on a rope. Also, he didn't have any gloves on, and we added them so that he wouldn't leave fingerprints.[7] ”

Kane signed away ownership in the character in exchange for, among other compensation, a mandatory byline on all Batman comics. This byline did not, originally, say "Batman created by Bob Kane"; his name was simply written on the title page of each story. The name disappeared from the comic book in the mid-1960s, replaced by credits for each story's actual writer and artists. In the late 1970s, when Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster began receiving a "created by" credit on the Superman titles, along with William Moulton Marston being given the byline for creating Wonder Woman, Batman stories began saying "Created by Bob Kane" in addition to the other credits.

Finger did not receive the same recognition. While he had received credit for other DC work since the 1940s, he began, in the 1960s, to receive limited acknowledgment for his Batman writing; in the letters page of Batman #169 (Feb. 1965) for example, editor Julius Schwartz names him as the creator of the Riddler, one of Batman's recurring villains. However, Finger's contract left him only with his writing page rate and no byline. Finger, like Shuster, Siegel, and some other creators during and after the Golden Age of Comic Books, would resent National's denying him the money and credit he felt was owed for his creations.[8] At the time of Finger's death in 1974, DC had not officially credited Finger as Batman co-creator.

Cartoon Cartoons Logo and Continuity

November 1998-January 1999: The only Cartoon Cartoons bumper revolved around one show only (and was frequently used after). Over a white background, the Powerpuff Girls float on the top right, while a red worm-like object creeps in from the left. Blossom charges towards it, and gets stuck, with Buttercup following suit a second later. Bubbles frees them by kicking the space between where they are stuck, and the screen zooms out, revealing the red "worm" to be part of a cursive "Cartoon", except the "n" is not completely formed (which Bubbles easily fixes by punching it). From the bottom, Blossom flies up with the word "CAR", and Buttercup does the same with "TOONS". Blossom and Buttercup slam the two segments together, with a blue background with circles beaming forward appearing behind when the logo is formed.
January 1999-August 2003: The Cartoon Network logo zooms up over a blue swirly background, accompanied by circles (probably meant to represent broadcast signals), then, after a few seconds, it thrusts itself forward. This is followed by red and yellow ribbons curling to form a cursive "Cartoon", followed by the letters in "CARTOONS" zooming out one by one (the "OO" zooms out together). A character from the upcoming show pops out of the first "O" in "CARTOONS" and says, "Cartoon Cartoons!" There are some variants, such as for Sheep in the Big City, when Sheep says, "Baa! Baa!" due to his inability to speak. Also, on first-run episodes of Grim and Evil, Grim would pop out of the first "O", with Boskov following suit with the second "O" a second later.
At the end of shows, it would show the aforementioned blue background with Cartoon Network logo (this time zooming out) accompanied by a voice saying "Cartoon Cartoons!" (the voice was not from the preceding cartoon, and in the afternoon, this was sometimes preceded by the same animation on a green background, followed by an iris-out leading into the aforementioned blue background.)
Cartoon Cartoon Fridays: The Cartoon Network logo zooms out, and the letters in it quickly flash on the screen one by one, followed by squares containing Cartoon Cartoon characters swirling away. This is followed by four squares covering the screen (they may or may not contain at least one character from the upcoming show), which in turn is followed by the curling ribbons (these ribbons, however, curl like the regular ones, but from bottom to top instead of left to right, and they are light and dark blue on black). Sound bars containing Cartoon Cartoon characters appear to the beat of the music, and when they clear, the CCF logo forms. A character from the upcoming show pops out of the second "O" in "CARTOON" and says "Cartoon Cartoon Fridays!", as circles beam forward from behind. Codename: Kids Next Door, Grim and Evil, and Time Squad did not have CCF bumpers, and instead used special versions of the regular bumpers.

When the new version of The Cartoon Cartoons Show premiered, when the main theme for the bumpers was the characters featured in a three-dimensional version of each of the show's worlds which became the network's continuity image after it relaunched in June 2004, only the female continuity announcer would say the quote, and the music remixed. The Cartoon Cartoon logo would be more three-dimensional and would be drawn "on" the sky. The Cartoon Cartoons Show is now the only place to find the Cartoon Cartoons name and logo on Cartoon Network.

The background music used during the Cartoon Cartoon bumps is still in usage as it is played over the production logo at the end of some Cartoon Network originals. The graphics are now simply the pre-2004 logo with a black background, and the subtext "A Time Warner Company" ("An AOL Time Warner Company" on shows between 2001 and 2003). It can also be seen on the DVD releases of the shows.

Cartoon Cartoons were first showcased as World Premiere Cartoons and later in 1993 on The What a Cartoon! Show, a series of comedic animated shorts produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions guided by Fred Seibert, who founded the Nickelodeon-based Frederator Studios years later. The first series to spin off from What-A-Cartoon! was Dexter's Laboratory in 1996. A year later, Johnny Bravo and Cow and Chicken joined Dexter on the Cartoon Network lineup. The Powerpuff Girls became a Cartoon Cartoon in the fall of 1998. Ed, Edd, n Eddy came later as the first Cartoon Cartoons series not to be introduced in a What-A-Cartoon! short.

More shows premiered bearing the Cartoon Cartoons brand, airing throughout the network's schedule and prominently on Cartoon Cartoon Fridays, which became the marquee night for premieres of new episodes and new shows.

As of September 2005, the name is primarily used for The Cartoon Cartoons Show, a half-hour program featuring episodes of older Cartoon Cartoons that are no longer shown regularly on the network, and Cartoon Cartoon Top 5, which is an hour long program featuring a countdown of the week's five "best" Cartoon Cartoons from the older lineup.
